Demonstrating its continued commitment to educational, social and youth upliftment, Implats’ subsidiary, Impala Platinum Limited (Impala), has renewed its Ponelopele vision and eyesight initiative for a second consecutive year. This impactful eye health programme is helping to transform young lives by identifying visual impairments among learners and providing prescription glasses to those in need. By enhancing students’ ability to see clearly, the initiative is supporting their learning, participation and overall wellbeing. So far, more than 900 Grade 5 and 6 learners from six primary schools in Impala’s mine communities in the Rustenburg area have had their vision screened.

Learners from Chaneng, Bonwakgogo, Kana, Tlhotlheletsang, Ramotse and Luka primary schools were recently assessed for eye health issues. Of those screened, 76 learners will receive prescription glasses to support their academic progress and enhance their everyday social inclusion.

Representatives from Impala, Vision4Change and local mine-community schools came together to mark the handover ceremony of the Ponelopele vision and eyesight initiative.

Moses Motlhageng, Chief Executive at Impala’s Western Limb operations, said, “Our Ponelopele initiative is identifying children with eye health issues and helping them see better, which gives them greater confidence to thrive. Good vision lays the foundation for a child’s development and something as simple as a pair of spectacles can restore a sense of belonging, boost self-esteem and create a renewed enthusiasm for learning. This small intervention has a big impact — it creates opportunities for improved academic performance, and ultimately, higher achievement and future economic opportunities for these learners.”

Omatla Monosi, a Grade 5 learner from Tlhotlheletsang Primary School in Kanana said, “I used to struggle to see the board and felt left behind in class. I’m excited to get my new glasses and to be able to keep up with my schoolwork. Thank you, Impala.”

Through the Ponelopele vision and eyesight initiative, prescription spectacles were given to 76 learners, following recent assessments of over 900 Grade 5 and 6 learners.
