FAQs
What subjects should I take in Grade 10–12?
The best subjects depend on the career you’re interested in, but Mathematics and Physical Sciences open the widest range of opportunities in mining. Many engineering, geology, metallurgy, environmental and technical careers require these subjects. English is also important, while subjects such as Engineering Graphics & Design (EGD), Information Technology, Computer Applications Technology (CAT), Accounting and Business Studies are useful for specific career paths.
What if I don’t get a bursary?
Don’t give up. Impala also offers learnerships for technical trades and a Graduate Programme for students who have completed their qualifications. You can also study independently and apply for graduate or advertised positions when you meet the requirements.
Can girls work underground?
Yes. Mining is open to both men and women. Women work underground and on surface in engineering, geology, mining, metallurgy, environmental management, health, finance, human resources and many other careers. Impala encourages applications from suitably qualified candidates regardless of gender.
What if I don’t study at university?
University is only one pathway. Many excellent careers begin through a TVET college, apprenticeship or learnership. Trades such as Electrician, Fitter, Boilermaker, Instrumentation Mechanician and Rigger are highly skilled careers that can lead to supervisory and management positions with experience.
What is the difference between a learnership and an apprenticeship?
At Impala, most artisan training is offered through learnerships. A learnership combines classroom learning with practical workplace experience and leads to a nationally recognised qualification. An apprenticeship is the traditional route to becoming an artisan, but today’s learnerships include many of the same practical elements while also leading to formal qualifications.
What does a graduate programme involve?
The Graduate Programme is a two-year internship for graduates who have completed their qualifications and need practical workplace experience. Graduates work alongside experienced professionals, receive mentoring and gain industry experience. Completing the programme does not guarantee permanent employment, but graduates may apply for suitable vacancies during the programme.
How do I apply for jobs at Impala?
Most vacancies are advertised on the Implats Careers website. You should regularly check the website for opportunities and carefully follow the application instructions. Some opportunities may also be advertised through career expos or other approved recruitment channels.
Can I work for Impala if I studied somewhere other than North West?
Yes. Impala recruits people from recognised universities and TVET colleges across South Africa. While some bursaries or community development programmes may give preference to local communities, employment opportunities are based on meeting the requirements of the advertised position.

Generally:
University qualifications are usually required for careers such as:
- Mining Engineer
- Metallurgist
- Geologist
- Environmental Officer
- Medical Officer
- Professional Occupational Health Nurse
- Commercial Lawyer
- Management Accountant
- Human Resources Practitioner

TVET colleges and learnerships provide pathways into careers such as:
- Electrician
- Fitter
- Boilermaker
- Instrumentation Mechanician
- Rigger / Ropesman
- Refractory Mason
Many people begin in a trade and later progress into supervisory or management roles through experience and further study.
Which careers are in highest demand?
Demand changes over time depending on business needs. However, mining companies regularly need skilled people in areas such as:
- Mining
- Engineering
- Metallurgy and mineral processing
- Electrical and mechanical trades
- Instrumentation and automation
- Geology
- Environmental management
- Occupational health and safety
- Information technology and cyber security
Choosing strong subjects at school, building practical skills and continuing to learn will give you the widest range of career opportunities.
Can I join Impala straight after school?
Answer:
Yes, depending on the opportunity. School leavers may apply for learnerships, bursaries or other entry-level programmes when applications open and they meet the advertised requirements. Some careers, such as engineering, geology or nursing, require further study before you can apply for professional roles.
How long will it take before I can start working?
Answer:
- Learnerships: about 3–4 years.
- Most diplomas: about 3 years.
- Most degrees: about 3–4 years.
- Engineering: generally 4 years.
- Medicine: considerably longer.
- Experience and registration may also be required for some professions.
