Reddam House Umhlanga is celebrating an extraordinary matric achievement by twin siblings Rebecca and Daniel Major, whose results and character exemplify the very best of the College.
The twins joined Reddam House Umhlanga in Grade 8 and have been quietly exceptional ever since. This year, their academic journey culminated in an outstanding 16 distinctions between them, placing them among the most accomplished students in the history of the school.
Rebecca Major was named Dux Scholar of Reddam House Umhlanga, achieving eight distinctions: English (90%), Afrikaans (94%), Mathematics (97%), Art (99%), Physical Sciences (90%), Life Sciences (95%), Life Orientation (89%) and Further Studies Mathematics (89%).
Daniel Major matched her excellence with eight distinctions of his own: English (87%), Afrikaans (90%), Mathematics (95%), History (90%), Physical Sciences (90%), Life Sciences (92%), Further Studies Mathematics (95%) and Life Orientation (85%).
While the academic results are exceptional, it is the twins’ humility, kindness and commitment to others that have most defined their time at the College. Daniel is widely known for his quiet leadership and service, particularly through tutoring younger students who were struggling with Mathematics. He gave his time patiently and without seeking recognition. Alongside his academic achievements, he has balanced a demanding sporting programme, distinguishing himself as a dedicated water polo player and a steady, dependable presence within the school.
Rebecca, meanwhile, has been recognised across the student body for her warmth and compassion. Elected by her peers as Head Girl, she quickly proved herself to be a leader who not only inspires but also uplifts those around her. Alongside her academic success, she has been deeply involved in the cultural life of the school, balancing leadership, performance and service with grace and emotional intelligence.
Their parents speak with immense pride about two young people whose drive for success has always come from within. They describe Rebecca and Daniel as grounded, internally motivated and deeply appreciative of the opportunities they have been given. Never arrogant, always striving quietly to be their best.
The Majors’ achievements form part of a record-breaking year for Reddam House Umhlanga. The College achieved a 100% pass rate, with a 99% Bachelor’s Degree pass rate. From a cohort of 89 candidates, the school produced 6 A+ aggregates, 21 A aggregates and 40 B aggregates, with an overall average of 75.5%. This equates to 2.97 distinctions per candidate, the strongest matric results in the history of the College.
College Head Shelley Peringuey said she was thrilled, but not surprised, by the results. “Our success comes down to two things,” she said. “Exceptional teachers who give generously of their time to support every student, and a school environment where students feel safe, believed in and encouraged to grow.”
She added that the depth of academic expertise at the College, with almost all matric teachers selected annually as IEB markers, ensures teaching remains rigorous and current. “But just as importantly,” she said, “we believe in developing the whole child. When students experience success across academics, sport and culture, confidence grows. Success breeds success, and our values ensure that ambition is always balanced with kindness and respect.”
Rebecca and Daniel Major embody this philosophy completely. Their matric results are exceptional, but it is their integrity, generosity and quiet leadership that make their story truly remarkable.
