Reddford House Northcliff’s College 1st football team has been crowned national Inspired Cup champion after overcoming an opening-match defeat to complete an unbeaten run through the remainder of the tournament.
Held at Reddam House Bedfordview, the Inspired Cup brought together Reddam House and Reddford House schools from across South Africa. Northcliff faced Reddam House Waterfall, Reddam House Ballito, Reddam House Atlantic Seabord, Reddford House Blue Hills and Reddam House Helderfontein before defeating Reddam House Constantia 3-0 in the final to claim the title.
Far from derailing the team’s campaign, its defeat in the opening match became the catalyst for an impressive turnaround.
“Losing our first game was a wake-up call and showed us the quality of the teams we were facing,” the team said. “Playing every day helped us build our chemistry and identify how we could improve. We remained focused on our goal of winning the tournament.”
Captain RyanRamsamoojh , a Grade 12 student, said his priority following the early setback was to keep the players calm and restore their confidence. “I reminded the team of our talent and what we were capable of achieving,” he said. “After that first match, our chemistry came together and we did not lose again.”
A victory over one of the tournament’s favoured teams on the second day proved an important turning point. “It gave us a great deal of confidence and made us realise we could compete with anyone,” Ramsamoojh said. “What made me most proud was the team spirit the boys displayed. We were never discouraged going into a game. We remained positive, enjoyed playing together and produced attractive football while converting our chances.”
Coach and Head of Sport John Kruger attributed the team’s success to commitment, consistency and belief. “The players trusted the process, worked hard in training and were willing to learn and improve,” Kruger said. “We focused on building a strong team culture in which everyone understood their role and played for one another. That preparation gave us the confidence to compete against some of the bigger and more established schools.”
He said the players had demonstrated character and discipline when placed under pressure, refusing to allow setbacks or the reputations of their opponents to affect their belief. “We were not the biggest or most favoured school, but we stuck together and believed in each other,” he said. “Winning the national title is a tremendous achievement, but I am even prouder of how the players represented our school and showed what is possible when a team believes in itself.”
Kruger said the victory reflected the progress being made across Northcliff’s football programme, from the Senior Preparatory team reaching the Discovery Cup final in Term 2 to the College team’s Inspired Cup success. “I see this as the beginning rather than the end,” he said. “Our aim is to build a sporting culture across the school in which teams are competitive, well coached and proud to represent Reddford House Northcliff. We want to build on this momentum, develop our younger students and create opportunities for more students to participate and compete at a high level.”
Executive Head Caryn Brinkley said lifting the Inspired Cup was a proud moment for the school’s students, staff and parents. “This victory is a wonderful reflection of how far our football programme has come, and I genuinely believe it is only the beginning of something very special for Northcliff,” she said.
“What makes me particularly proud is that the team showed that success is not only about talent. Their commitment, discipline, hard work and willingness to work for one another were evident throughout the tournament. They remained humble, respected their opponents and represented our school exceptionally well.” Brinkley said the players’ conduct on and off the field was as important as the result. “Representing Reddford House Northcliff is about much more than the score. It is about how you conduct yourself, how you treat others and how you respond to both success and adversity. Our football team embodied these values and represented our school with tremendous pride, humility and class.
